Opened in 1990 and designed by Joseph Lee, the course makes full use of the wet, marshy ground near the sea. It is the most recent of the Vilamoura courses.
The layout is very different from the two other Vilamoura courses. Here the golfer can drive off more confidently, because of the greater width of the fairways. On the Pinhal course, strategically-placed bunkers are the main difficulty, while on Marina and Lago water is near -permanent obstacle, not to mention the bunkers - 88 of them over a total of 27 holes.
Lee may have designed a course that is visually intimidating, but because it is not very long, the golfer may complete it without great difficulty. The result is that the satisfaction of the golfer, after finishing his holes, is even greater.
Pro Tips.
The 1st hole is an impressive par 5. You need a good drive and 2nd shot, but the crunch comes with the approach. You have to carry an impressive array of bunkers to find the stepped green. And that´s the least of your worries, because the green slopes to it's front, creating huge burrows, with the step to complicate the line.
The par 4 fifth strikes terror into even the staunchest player. The tee is nicely elevated, but the over hanging trees on the left narrow the line of the drive which has a lake to carry: it's about 160m. If you strike the ball well, there are waiting bunkers beyond the landing area. The approach must carry fingers of their lake to find a generous but sloping green. It's always difficult to have faith in the distance markers at this hole.
The 2nd nine starts off with a fairly straightforward par 5. However, that belies the demands for accuracy which this 9 makes. None more than the par 3 twelfth of some 178m, with a carry over an extensive lake. The force of the wind, and its direction, will determine the club.
Never easy, because the high flying shot, which is ideal, will most respond to the vagaries of the wind. The par 4 fourteenth will test the tee shot of every golfer. A right-handed dog.leg determines the length and direction of the shot. The target is a very tight landing area between fairway bunkers and the lake on the right. The approach to a well protected green is then over the corner of the water. It's always a tough hole. The par 5 fifteenth is a "hop skip and jump" hole, and needs a good drive, good 2nd shot and accurate approach shot to the forward sloping green. With water intersecting the fairway, and to the right, the chances of a "Barnes Wallis" is more than likely.
