San Lorenzo Golf

San Lorenzo Golf CourseThe course's rare and many-faceted beauty, matched by impeccable upkeep, make San Lorenzo a true pearl of Portuguese golf. Its eighteen widely-ranging holes run past pine trees, lakes and the beautiful beaches of the Algarve coast.

Situated in the exclusive Quinta do Lago tourist development and forming part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the course is demanding and imaginative. It opens with an inviting but almost unachievable par 5, and continues to the three following holes along rolling, pine-fringed fairways. It is from the 5th hole, however, that the most extraordinary part begins. offering stunning views over the beaches of the Algarve coast. At the 8th, the course turns back inland and faces the largest of its' two lakes.

San Lorenzo Golf CourseFor the last four holes the course again turns seawards, and finished with a par 4 whose small green is surrounded by the waters of the second lake. A remarkable end to this remarkable course that demands the use of all the clubs in the bag.Pro Tips.

San Lorenzo Golf CourseWhen you come to the par 3 fifth, your looking directly out to sea from the elevated tee. It's 129m over a deep dip. The 6th & 7th skirt the estuary and the fairways aren't generous. The 6th is stroke 1 and you can find out the hard way! It's a dog-leg left and the green sits slightly off line of the fairway. If you play safe and don´t cut the corner, you really have to fly a good mid iron to land on the green. The 8th produces problems. A 525m par 5, with water all down the right and out of bounds on the left. Don't automatically take the driver here; you could reach the lake. Because of it, the tendency is to play left. Then you have bunkers to carry, and pines which seem to reach out and interfere with the ball in flight. If all is well so far, you have to carry the end of the lake to the green, and must get the ball to sit down quickly.
San Lorenzo Golf CourseThere are par 5's again at the 10th & 15th. The latter is an exercise in bunker dodging to the green. But the last 2 holes are the ones which will leave a lasting impression. Particularly the 18th. They're both par 4's, average length, but the 18th demands an approach shot over water. The green seems unattainable and the dropping zone gets more than its fair share of use.
