Quinto Do Lago Golf South

The original layout was 27 holes, but the subsequent addition of a further 9 holes created 2 completely distinct courses. Originally known as A, B, and C, B & C comprised the old Championship course. Now known as "Quinta do Lago" it has paid host to 7 Portuguese Opens. "A" and newcomer "D" make up the Ria Formosa Course. This has enormously enhanced the golf on offer at this prestigious location only 20 mins from Faro airport. Both courses enjoy spectacular views.

Situated in a superb area and blessed with the scenery of the Ria Formosa, the Quinta do Lago courses have won international fame in the golfing world. Quinta do Lago offered four nine-hole loops with sufficient flexibility to allow four eighteen-hole combinations. However, a recent transformation divided these four loops into two distinct courses, the most famous being Quinta do Lago, built from loops B and C. Designed by William Mitchell and opened in 1974, the course allows the golfer the flexibility to approach the greens in various ways. Besides the strategic bunker placements, the highlight is the most famous hole on the course - the 15th, a par 3 requiring a 200m shot from the championship tee over a lake and onto a green surrounded by pine trees.

Pro Tips.

The 1st isn´t too difficult. There is some leeway from the generous fairway and the approach to the large green of this par 4 has no intrusive hazards. A couple of bunkers or so. No problem.
A long par 5 follows. The 3rd is a par 4 of 387m and flows over a rise in the fairway,frustratingly masking the finger of water coming in on the left in front of the green. if your 2nd shot is in anyway wanting, you´ll have a pretty good idea where the ball will be. A firm, confident approach to the elevated green and you'll be justly rewarded.
The hugely elevated tee at the par-4 ninth somehow encourages a forced drive, which will find trouble on the left and right. This hole doglegs left and a longish, straight drive is rewarded with sight of the green. The fairway dips away off the tee, and then climbs again, so the approach is invariably an uphill lie. Your best shot is to the right side of the green.
Probably the most memorable hole is the 200m par-3 fifteenth, with a large lake which you have to carry. The green is set in a semi-circle of umbrella pines and you get to it across a distinctive wooden bridge. It really does stick in your mind. Very picturesque...
