Penina Golf

Penina Golf Course The Penina Championship Course is the most brilliant of Sir Henry Cotton's designs. The triple winner of the British open, later a course designer, was one of the first to recognise the Algarve's enormous potential as a golfing paradise. The quality and success of the Penina course encourages the construction of many other courses in the Algarve.

Penina Golf Course The Championship Course opened in 1966, and although totally rebuilt in 1994/95, it still maintains its original features. It is a fairly flat, wooden course, with countless bunkers, almost four hundred thousand trees, several lakes, wide greens and a vast tee area, making the course a true championship test.

Penina also boats two nine-hole courses, also designed by Sir Henry Cotton: the Resort Course, a charming par 35 (2,987m); and the Academy Course, a short par 30 (1,851m).

Penina Golf Course Pro Tips.

The Championship Course is Sir Henry Cotton's Masterpiece - by which he wished to be remembered.

The 1st hole is a testing par 4 dog-leg left. The 2nd - stroke index1 - is 401m and there an out of bounds water hazard all the way down the left. If you don't get a good long drive away, you'll be stymied for the approach. The green is doomed, undulating and there's a water hazard in front. There's only 1 par 5 on the 1st 9 and you really need a plan of action here. It seems moderately long at 431m, but a channel which crosses the fairway can come into play form the tee. It's a dog-leg left, but the lake in front of the green - again doomed - is a watery home to many a ball. The safe route to the green is across the channel, right and then over the water at its narrowest point.
The 9th is a tricky dog-leg left. You need to drive 200m to have any chance of reaching the green in regulation. The back 9 has 4 par 5's: 10,11,17 & 18. The 12th is a fair test too. It's 389m, absolutely straight down a tree lined fairway. The green is protected by a small lake and can cause trouble. Of th 2 par 3's on this 9, the 13th has water on the right all the way. It's 197m and you'll need a long iron or wood. The 2 par 5 finishing holes are not too long and you have a good chance of a birdie on each.
