Pestana Golf Gramacho, is an 18 hole championship course also located at Carvoeiro Golf Club. Previously a 9-hole course, it was extended to 18 holes in 2002.
Nick Price, the former world Nr.1 player, has teamed up with the well-known golf course architect, Ronald Fream, to create a uniquely designed 18 hole course with 27 varied greens that enable the golfer to play the same course several times with different greens and new challenges.
The design technique has positioned the greens and protective bunkers so that an 18 hole round is a genuine challenge. The positioning of the tee markers helps to increase this variety still further. As in the case of the Pinta Course, this course is maintained at tournament standard all the year round.
In the Nick Price style, the wonderful characteristics already existing on the site, from the boulder outcrops and dry stone walling to the fig, carob and olive trees, have been complemented by artfully positioned lakes and bunkers. These hazards, combined with the design of the greens and fairways, result in a challenging but attractive course.
From the first stroke off the tee to the final green, Gramacho Golf course ensures the player must adopt the best strategy to achieve an optimum result. At the end of the round, experienced golfers will be able to confirm that they have played a good course, with a challenging 72 par over a more-than-sufficient length of 6,107 meters.
The original 9 holes (1-4 and 14-18) were designed by Ron Fream of Golfplan USA and have wide fairways and two different greens available. The newer 9 (holes 5-13) are narrower.
Gramacho Golf course is a par 71 and is 6107 metres long. All par 4s and 5s, like the Pinta Course, are dog-legs.
The course is a result of a conversion from Ronald Freams's original, unique double 9 layout. The opening holes remain as much as before, but the new holes - 5 through to 13 - bring the course to potential champion status. All are3 on undulating land, with narrow fairways demanding careful play. As with it's sister course, Vale da Pinta, Gramacho is maintained to a high standard all year round.
The relatively short opening hole is a par 4 with an outcrop of rocks and trees dominating the fairway. The par 5 second has strategically located lone pines potentially forcing the drive too far to the left. After holes 3 & 4 - par 4 & par 3 respectively - you temporarily leave Fream's original double-nine layout and head into a new nine designed by Rick Eliot and Nick Price.
The par 4, 342m fifth drives to a narrow landing area. The land to the left inclines towards the middle of the fairway and you need to get to the top of the incline to fully appreciate the complexity of the next shot. The hole is a dog-leg left and the fairway narrows down to a tight entrance at the green. The putting surface is fraught with borrow and suddenly what looked a generous green is anything but welcoming.
The par 3 seventh plays 153m of the back tees, from and elevated tee to a green protected by a single olive tree waiting to knock the ball off course as it comes to land. The best line in appears to be right centre, but think carefully about that slope and exactly how it may affect the end of the shot.
The signature hole is now probably the par 3 tenth - a picturesque hole, playing from and elevated tee to a green half surrounded by by a lake, a tumbling fountain and a tall palms which certainly add an exotic touch.
The layout incorporates no conspicuous rough - bushes, scrub, sandy tracks or delineating fairways. So perhaps the wheel has come full circle.
Gramacho still offers something rather unique: "Wall to wall golf" is the concept here.
