The new course at Castro Marim is part of a development of truly exceptional quality, conceived with the goal of providing unique leisure opportunities. Its location is exceptional, in the tranquil Leeward Algarve - the first course in this area of beautiful views over the Atlantic Ocean, the Guadian River and the Nature Reserve. The so-called Atlantic course was designed to take advantage of the natural rolling hills and is dotted with many decorative lakes. The fairways are of Bermuda grass and the greens of the new Penn A4 grass.
What makes Castro Marim Golfe and Country Club so special is the rare marriage, in one place, of such important factors. History, culture, nature, the river, the sea, the beach and sport all combine. And the quality of service is unbeatable.
From the start the overriding characteristics are clear. At 375m downhill, the par 4 first may not appear too strenuous but, as you stand on the the elevated tee, you can soon see why it is rated stroke index 4. The fairway is narrow and lined with young pine trees. It drops away but climbs to the elevated green.
The par 5 fourth is a dog-leg left, but a good drive may reach the lake on the right side of the descending fairway.
The 2nd and approach are uphill and the green is well protected by a bunker, young pines and the falling lie of the land.
On the back 9, the 11th a par 4 of 323m can be deceptive. Once again, a well struck drive may find water protecting the green. This is a good hole, but it's brain not brawn that will secure you par here.
The par 3 seventeenth, 130m is almost always subject to onshore prevailing sea winds. With bunkers in front and a lake behind, think very carefully what club you pick.
