Calanova Golf Course's 18 holes were designed Julian Garcia Mayoral of Aymerich Golf Management. Facilities include the new club house, bar, restaurant, pro-shop, a driving range and putting greens.Calanova Golf Club plans to restrict its membership to respect the exclusive, unspoilt feel of the luxury development. Julian Garcia May has made the most of Calanova's natural surroundings and has come up with a course that medium handicap
players will find is a pleasure, yet challanging to play. Strategically placed bunkers and lakes populate the course, and it's hard to believe this green and tranquil sanctuary is just 5 minutes from the village of La Cala.
Calanova Golf Course has been selected for one of the host venues for the Iberian Club Challenge 2009 and 2010.
DRAMATIC DRIVES AND A SPARKLING MEDITERRANEAN
A welcome addition to the stable of golf courses in the region of Andalucia is the new course Calanova, on the Costa del Sol. During a visit I was immediately impressed by the warmth of the welcome and doubly so when I found that the, buggy included, green fee rate during low season is 55€ while the high season rate, still including buggy, has been set at a very attractive 70€. Another golf course, offering green fees at prices which do not threaten bankruptcy, is exactly what the region requires.
When a golf course quotes buggy inclusive green fees it is a fair indication that you can expect something of an up and down trail and Calanova is no exception. What does come as a surprise is, despite the many changes in elevation the playing areas are, with a few notable exceptions, fairly flat. The course provides an excellent but stern test and is one which will certainly suit the proficient golfer; high handicappers may find it somewhat difficult but, nonetheless, will doubtless enjoy their surroundings. Standing on the first tee the view of a magnificently blue Mediterranean sparkling in the background is quite spectacular and generates a delightful feeling of tranquillity. A big lake, which stretches out in front of the tee, is also eye-catching!. With a carry of less than 100-metres it is really not in play but, with nerves playing a part, it will doubtless become a rich source of second-hand (only hit once!) golf balls. The fifth is located down in a valley and recently planted palm trees will add a visual dimension to an otherwise lacklustre hole.
The signature hole may well prove to be the par-3 sixth, which measures 163-metres, and what a delightful hole it is. From an elevated tee the view is of a green in a valley below with a small bunker at the front and a larger one to the left; of more significance is the large lake glistening menacingly on the right. The green, which slopes severely from back to front, is colossal and when the new trees, standing like sentries hither and yon, spread their palms the hole will be a photographer’s delight and one which will remain in the memory bank for many a long day.
After a most enjoyable round, and prompted by gentle reminders from a rumbling tummy, I thought that lunch would be an excellent idea and settled for the menu of the day. An extremely courteous waiter took my order and, in no time, an appetising cream soup was placed before me. That was followed by thinly sliced pork in a pepper sauce (with trimmings) and by the time a piece of the juiciest melon I have tasted for ages was downed I felt in need of a siesta. The menu, together with a drink, cost a very acceptable 15€ and augurs well for the future of the restaurant.
The golf course at Calanova is still somewhat unknown but the welcoming staff and excellent value offered provide all the necessary ingredients for success. I doubt that it will be long before this particular course features prominently on the itinerary of visiting golfers.
