Benamor Golf

Benamor Golf Course

Sir Henry Cotton was inspired by Quinta de Benamor's old church to plan a clubhouse here which would have been the first course in this Algarve region. Unfortunately, the legendary British golf champion and course designer died the following year, and the project underwent various changes under Howard Swan and Raymond Jones. It is their touch that gives the course, finally opened in 2000, it's defining characteristics.

Benamor Golf CourseIt is a reasonably undulating course, boasting both mountain and sea-views, dotted largely by carob, olive and fig trees. The opening holes of each nine are the easiest, offering birdie opportunities, but the rest are longer and more difficult. The greens are wide and inviting, and hold the ball well.

The church is being completely renovated and will shortly be open for worship; the clubhouse was built next to the church and the farm's old manor house. Together with Castro Marim, the new course at Benamor has the distinction of finally bringing the game to the Leeward Algarve region.

Benamor Golf CoursePro Tips.

The par 4 (308m) opening hole is a gentle introduction to the course. A slight dog-leg to the right leads to an elevated and generous green with bunkers an each side. An accurate second shot will be rewarded with a chance of an early par. Many of the par 4's on this first 9 are relatively short and have pleasant views over the undulating terrain. With care and thoughtful club selection, even the higher handicapper can look to reach the greens in regulation.
The par 5 fifth (466m) has an uphill drive from the tee. The 2nd shot must be a confident high flier to set up the approach shot to the green. The par 3 eighth - at 195m tests club selection to the full. Depending on the wind direction and playing confindence, it can anything from a fairway wood to a mid iron. The stepped green, an intrusive cork oak and bunkers demand unerring accuracy. The second 9 starts with a tricky par 3 over water, a short uphill par 4 and further par 3. The par 4 thirteenth, marked 289m on the card, does not seem overly long. However, the fairway is dissected by a stone banked stream. If you feel confident of carrying this from the tee, then all well and good. If you drive the hazard, there is definately a birdie chance. If you must lay-up, then it's a short or mid iron shot to reach the elevated green.
Benamor Golf CourseThe par 5 fifteenth (454m) welcomes you on the tee with a spectacular view of Tavira island and the sea beyond. The finishing hole - a long par 5 of 512m off the championship tees - begins with an uphill tee shot. The 2nd needs to negotiate encroaching trees and, depending on how you have played these 2 shots, the 3rd approach may demand a wood or a wedge. Backed by a de-consecrated church, the large green is particularly attractive and remains in the mind's eye as representative of all that is Benamor. This is definitely a user friendly course to visit.
